What is the point of the TV show, 'Fifth Gear'?

Isn't it made by the BBC, who also make Top Gear? They're the exact same program, but with different presenters. Surely it would make more sense for Top Gear to be the irreverent program that tests all the cars most people could never afford, whilst Fifth Gear should be a more serious program that tests cars that most people would realistically buy.

Update:

I don't agree with some of the comments; whenever I see Fifth Gear these days, their show consists entirely of testing the same sorts of ridiculously expensive fantasy sports/racing cars as Top Gear. Though I will concede that Fifth Gear focuses more on testing cars, whereas Top Gear focuses on ridiculous stunts.

Fifth Gear and Top Gear and not the same program. They do air on different channels and where Top Gear is a one-hour entertainment program that sometimes features cars Fifth Gear is a half-hour proper car test show where they,... (wait for it) primarily test cars and cover automotive related topics. What you described as what these programs should be is pretty much what they have been for the last decade.

they're not the same program. Top Gear USED to be a car show. then it lost the whole serious car element and survived for a bit by being funny, but now its just three middle aged men bickering to a badly worded unconvincing script whilst constantly trying to outdo the other. pitiful. have you seen the last 'India special' episode. crock of crap.

Fifth Gear appears to have actually picked up where TG has failed miserably, and is focusing on the actual cars that both shows are SUPPOSED to be about.

Fifth gear is essentially a slightly more realistic version of Top Gear.

I've seen a little here and there but it appears more professional and focuses on everyday cars.
