05 Equinox ABS pump comes on at stops, no warning lights?

My bro in laws Equinox, I did a front brake job because he said he had a noise when stopping. I drove it and didn't really hear anything, but I did notice it had a "pulse" on the pedal like it had a warped rotor. Pads weren't the greatest either, so I did pads and rotors. Went to bed in the brakes and everything seemed fine. But very often (not always) I had the ABS pump "grunting" just before stopping. I guess this is what they were actually talking about as their concern. ABS light is not coming on so am guessing it's not a sensor, could it maybe be a dirty pickup (the thing the sensor reads)? I suppose it could be the rear but to tell the truth I don't even know what the ABS uses for wheel speed on the rear, it is drum rear brakes. It is AWD if it makes a difference, and about 110K on it.. Just seems more of an irritation than a safety issue. It does stop just fine. Doesn't do it every time. If I really am smooth coming to a stop it is less likely to do it, If I do what I would consider a normal stop, it does it maybe 1/2 the time. ABS otherwise seems to work fine, like on ice. Tire tread looks good, but rubber seems hard as a rock, although it is very cold here now.

Update:

PS what I mean by "grunting" is the ABS pump on and makes that "moaning" noise, you can feel it in the pedal, so the ABS pump is coming on as though the ABS system thinks it needs to prevent a lock up, in situations where it shouldn't need to come on.

It sounds as if there is either a build up of dirt or corrosion on the reluctor ring, the toothed ring that turns with the wheel. What could be happening is that there is just enough of a build up that the vehicle thinks one of more wheels is about to lock up. Unfortunately, you'll need to inspect and clean all four. The drums have them too, they are buried at the back up against the backing plate.

***MUST READ FOR EQUINOX ABS SENSOR ISSUES***

Most mechanics do not think this far a head as the problem can be caused multiple things.

The most common is the wheel bearings wear out causing the break sensor to touch the hub causing the sensor to error out.

If it happens to one bearing the rest are going to be bad soon. So fix them all.

The good thing is the fix is relatively easy. The bad thing is the parts are a little pricey.

You'll have to replace all the wheel hubs to fix the problem.

Here is another part that also requires attention and repairs to fix the ABS errors. If any of the other parts in the suspension are worn it will affect the rotation of the wheel and sensors, mostly when breaking. Example: if the front struts are worn out or have lost the gas charge the wheel will have some "chatter" when breaking. It may not be noticeable to the driver or you may not feel it in the steering wheel. However, the wheel sensor picks this up as loss of traction. So, if you replaced the hubs and you are still having the same issue, replacing the struts along with the wheel hub could fix the problem. Have your mechanic look at the rest of the suspension parts to ensure there are not any issues.

Another benefit to repairing the worn suspension parts is your vehicle will drive nicer and will be much safer to drive.

As you were told when you were a kid, "pay attention

No-brainer. The wheel speed signal is dropping out on one or more of the wheels as the vehicle slows down, causing the ABS system to think one wheel has stopped rotating, thus actuating the ABS. You either have a bad wheel speed sensor or more likely (given the type of vehicle this is) a badly worn front Hub and Bearing Assembly, which also happens to contain the wheel speed sensor.

My hubby bought a 1996 Corrado in 1996, and within 3 years he had an intermittent problem with the ABS light coming on. For the past 4 years it has remained on all the time. He always has it serviced / MOT'd by a VW specialist, who has checked everything and confirmed that there is no problem mechanically, just with the electronics of this light. It has sailed thru mots no probs.

I have similar problem where the pump I a running then stops. I had it diagnosed and they told me EBCM ABS module is bad. I was getting code C0265.

But you say the problem is with the speed sensor. Did you get your problem resolved?
