Newton's alchemical work confused those who knew about it. By Newton's time, alchemy had been relegated to the sidelines because it didn't work. Alchemists believed magic, used with chemistry, could get elements to change. They were wrong. No one successfully changed lead to gold, and no one ever created the Philosopher's Stone. After his death, most of Newton's alchemical writings were destroyed by his family, who were afraid that people would find out about Newton's involvement with this discredited science.
