how long before i plan a trip do i need to apply for a passport?

i have never before had a passport and now want to go for a vacation how long do i need to apply before planning?

    It is supposed to take 4 to 6 weeks to get a passport, but occasionally it can be longer. you should go ahead and get the passport now..or allow 3 months to be on the safe side.

    Usual processing time is about 4-6 weeks. It may be sooner but it may take longer depending on how busy they are.

    2 months for sure, but expect it to take longer.
