HELP, I am being overworked, what should I do?

I am a salaried employee with a major IT company. My boss wants me to take the lead for a particular subject matter, but the ammount of work that comes with it is WAAAAAAY too much for one person. I have stated numerous times, we needed at least 3-4 more people doing very specific tasks, but it's been 7 months and we still don't have the people. Addtionally, he keeps telling me change is on the way, he doesn't want to see me stuffer, but things ALWAYS get worse. His expectation is that all team members work 100 hours a week, and be available 24x7. I want to commit suicide, and have sought councelling, but I can't go cause of work. I would just quit, but I don't think I would be able to get unemployment benefits. I just don't know what to do anymore.

    Just because he expects 100 hours does not mean you give it. Start leaving after 8 to 10 hours.

    What you have to do is tell your boss no about taking the lead. Sounds like a promotion in responsibilities but not with the needed personnel. But good luck with that as bosses hate to hear the word NO from subordinates.

    Or your boss is overloaded himself and is trying to pass the buck to someone else.

    I hope you are not exaggerating when you say your boss expects you to work 100 hours a week, as that is impossible. He might be one of those workaholics who thinks everyone should enslave themselves to the job.

    You need to discuss this with the HR department about excessive number of hours on the job. The company might have work rules that limit how much time per day a worker is allowed to be on the business property working. And federal law requires overtime pay even for salaried workers, believe it or not.

    How do you prevent him from calling you 24/7 at home ?

    Whenever you use the bathroom for anything, like brushing teeth, taking a lonnnnnnnng bath, you simply turn off the cell phones, unplug the landlines, and relax. It's a legitimate break.

    Same thing when eating meals. Disconnect, it's break time.

    Same thing when driving. Turn off the cell phone. But you might say, I need a cell phone to report emergencies. So get a prepaid cell phone like a TracFone and never give out the number to anyone at work. Use it very sparingly. It will be your backup phone too.

    And see if you can do volunteer work at a nearby hospital. This gives you another reason to turn off the cell phone a few hours a week, as the hospital staff won't allow you to receive calls in the building. It also gives you something to tell HR that you need to "give back to the community".

    And the hospital staff can be your therapy group, but only after you've been volunteering for several months. You can also eat a meal in the hospital cafeteria each time and seek out a group of people to sit with and tell stories with, depending on the personalities there.

    It seems like your putting the stress on yourself, you first work later explain to your boss the emotional toll it is taking on you. It seems he only does it cause your so willing to do the work hes human too i think he would understand, and if he fires you sue him lol
