BMW Knowledgeable ANSWER ONLY instrument panel cluster swap. 1999 328i?

Okay I have a 5-Speed 328i. My odometer is ruined. What year model odometers will work without tripping any lights on panel. I know the manipulation dot will probably appear but I don't want to trigger any other faulty lights. Please only answer if you are 100% sure on your answer. I have searched all over the net but everyone seems to be quite confused in this subject. Also will a Automatic cluster work?

That would depend on which 1999 BMW 3-series you have. In the US that was the crossover year where the E36 was being phased out and the E46 was being phased in. If you have a 1999 4-dr sedan then it's the E46. If you have a 1999 coupe or convertible then it's an E36. First off there is no easy way around the mileage tamper dot. The VIN on any used cluster is not going to match the VIN in the other modules so right off you will get the tamper dot. The only legit way around that is to buy a new uncoded cluster for big bucks and have the dealer code it to the car properly. They will read the VIN and mileage out of the back up storage module and burn it into the new cluster. No mileage tamper dot.

If you don't care about that tamper dot then you need to find a cluster from the same generation car (E36 or E46), if you have a 2-dr then you can use a 4-dr cluster, but, not vice versa (2-dr is missing some lights for door ajar). Don't swap M3 cluster with a non-M3 I think the RPM will come out wrong. Not sure about differences between 5-speed manual and auto (sorry). Just to be safe stay with the same type of tranny. Another thing is BMW does mid model refreshes also called facelift. Sometimes the electronics make significate changes for the facelift so try and get a cluster from the same facelift or non facelift car.

Your best bet is to remove your current cluster and take it to a SPEEDOMETER shop. Usuaqlly, for about $100, they will fix and remake the odometer and whatever else is wrong. ANother thing to try is to send the WHOLE cluster back to VDO. where they will repair it with a warranty. THeir address is on the web. I have had to do that TOO. GOOD LUCK! You might try car-part.com for a good used one from a wrecked BMW. YOu may have to swap a few cluster parts around to do it. GOOD LUCK!
