If we want to lower the deficit why not tax churches?

Most places of worship have no property tax and are treated as charitable organizations. It seems the option of placing a tax of any sort on churches is avoided, but would it not be a legitimate source of revenue?

You answered your own question. They have been historically treated as non-profit charitable organizations. Non-religious non-profits get the same treatment.

To start taxing churches would be a violation of the 1st Amendment.
