I have hooked my laptop to my tv. Is there a way to turn the monitor off on my laptop and just use the TV screen? I am running windows 7. Thanks

Yes, you can:
Under Control Panel->All Control Panel Items->Display->Screen Resolution.
Select from the multiple displays drop down Display only on Screen # (Probably 2) Where Screen Number is the screen Number assigned to your TV.
