Is there a way to extend my wife's recovery time and keep her status and benefits?

My wife had surgery that requires more than 12 weeks of recovery. If she is out longer than 12 weeks she looses her status and benefits. In NC USA, does anyone know where to get advice to see if there is some way around this? She needs a few more weeks recovery time, but we can't afford for her to loose her status of especially her benefits.

Highly unlikely. FMLA is already there to ensure that your wife can keep her benefits and status for 12 weeks within in the company, and that's all her employer has to do. It's possible that she could just ask her work if they'll be nice to extend it for a few weeks, but they are a business after all and are in the business of making money not being nice guys, but you never know.
