    A 'like term' is when the same variable is raised to the same power and is able to be simplified into one unit. In this particular equation you listed four terms. The only variable you listed is X with the remainder being regular numbers. Nothing is raised higher than the power of one, so no need to worry about exponents this time.

    10X and X both have X to the first power in them while 4.5 and -9 have no variable and are both raised to the first power. We can conclude that 10X + X can be simplified to 11X and that 4.5 - 9 can be simplified to -4.5.

    Now when writing out your final equation it is proper to list exponents first by the highest power. So the final answer would be like this:

    11X - 4.5 =
