What happens when you heat graphite?

Just curious and wondering what would happen if you heated pencil lead.

Pencil lead is mainly graphite, which is an allotrope of carbon. Heating carbon would make it react with oxygen, producing carbon dioxide or monoxide, depending on the amount of oxygen available for reaction.
