Americans. Can you tell me who said, in 1981: "Trees cause more pollution than automobiles do."?
Ok I'll tell you...It was Ronald Reagan. Now
BQ: Why do you people insist on lauding this man and continuing this charade which pretends he was something other than a moron?

my three favourite reagan quotes-
Facts are stupid things." -at the 1988 Republican National Convention, attempting to quote John Adams, who said, "Facts are stubborn things"
"Trees cause more pollution than automobiles."
"All the waste in a year from a nuclear power plant can be stored under a desk."

Reagan is lionized by the right because he's all they have.
Look at the past five Republican Presidents:
Nixon. Impeached.
Ford. Half term because he pardoned Nixon.
Reagan. Senile apocalyptic, but somewhat charismatic.
Bush the First. "Read my lips, no new taxes."
Bush the Second. Worst. President. Ever.
They need to point to Ronnie, in living memory he was the best of a bad lot. Pity the poor cons...

I don't remember if he said something like that or not, but I have heard Republicans claim that trees pollute. Of course, Reagan like to take horse rides on his ranch, which is free of automobiles. I wonder why he does not ride his horse on the streets of Los Angeles instead. Is it because he likes the air better at his ranch than in Los Angeles?

I did know that, darling.
BQ: I don't understand the worship, either, darling, and I'm an American. I never fell for him - sometimes it felt like I was one of 18 or 20 people who voted against him and opposed him throughout his awful tenure...the whole rest of the country seemed to want to believe the hype so badly that they refused to see him honestly.
Having lived through the Reagan years as a voting adult, I can tell you that he was an absolutely suckish president, who inhabited a role and let less twinkly and avuncular people run the country for him...people who had no conscience about infesting us with policies that damaged the country and had long-term negative effects on our political sphere.
He was a moron and his administration was toxic.
There was a pretty good Saturday Night Live sketch called "If Reagan had Survived the Assassination" that pointed out the difference between his words and his policies, but I can't find a clip of it.

If it's any help to understanding, my grandmother told me she planned to vote for him because "he was so handsome and never played a bad guy in the movies." When I explained what he wanted to do to her Social Security and Medicare benefits, and to programs affecting students and schools, she had enormous difficulty believing me...she had the hardest time believing the reality behind the image.

Don't know why he gets so much worship over here. Maybe because he happened to be president during a strong economy, and paid lip service to all the American myths.
But as someone who works in the mental health field, I can say that as governor and president he was devastating. He closed down mental hospitals, forcing ex-patients into homelessness. No wonder the homeless problem exploded in the 80s.

If THAT was all the lasting and INSANE legacy that The B-rated Preacher of the Me Me Me Culture had left behind, we wouldn't have been in so much trouble, NOW.
He was BY FAR the worst political disaster this country has EVER had to face.
He, and his Neo-Con pals and protégé's, managed to suck all the culture, brains and humanity out of an otherwise brilliant and compassionate nation, and transform it into @$$ets for their greedy corporate buddies, and dirty political & religious partners in crime.
"WELL", .... WELL WHAT, you FREAKIN' MORON?
.

Yes but he was very good at being a moron. You couldn't do it any better! (that's a compliment).
Morons seem to attracted to morons.

We now know of course that he was suffering from alzheimers. Too bad Newt isn't

Yes, I knew it was he. How embarrassing.
