It's good for you. People claim it isn't because it's high in saturated fat, so they say it's bad for your heart. However, coconut oil contains lauric acid, which helps in preventing various heart problems including high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. Other health benefits include aiding in weight loss and digestion, boosting immunity, and helping in the prevention of certain diseases.

It's quite good for you.
BUT, until recently it had been grouped with other all saturated fats as "bad" because its differences from the other saturated fats hadn't been noticed or researched.
It has been noticed now (though some docs/etc seem not to be up to date yet), and those differences are great enough to make it actually one of the healthiest of oils/fats.
This explains the history and details better:

Note that it's the "virgin" or unrefined coconut oil that has most of the benefits. That will be very white and appear to have some bubbles/etc in it, not totally smooth and/or slightly yellowish like the "refined" stuff. Here's a pic of the one I currently have (from Whole Foods)**

I use mine for cooking, as well as skin health, hair, and more... and even for my cat--on fur and in food. And btw, the virgin kind smells absolutely wonderful though not an overpowering scent.
** Coconut oil becomes solid at about room temperature (75 F), so except in summertime it will be solid (so comes in a jar rather than in a bottle). Putting it on skin melts it quickly though, or putting in a pan for cooking, or warming in a microwave or container of hot water, etc. I keep a little spoon near mine to scrape it out to use.
