In its simplest form each player gets 5 cards, players can bet, and the best 5 card hand of any player who matched the final bet wins; hands are ranked primarily based on different combinations of matching ranks but the full list is here

There are zillions of variations of poker that involve having additional rounds of betting, dealing additional cards, dealing cards one or two at a time, dealing communal cards that any player can use, and even reversing the ranks of hands completely. Hopefully this is a comprehensive but comprehensible theoretical groundwork for this great game!
