2011 F-150 fuel mileage (Ford Techs or engineers only please)?

I have worked as a GM/Chrysler dealership tech for ten years myself. I just bought a 2011 Ford F-150 3.7L 2WD. The sticker says it should get 23 on the highway. I am getting about 19.5. The truck should be broke in by now with about 7500 miles on it. The truck is driven on the interstate 130 miles daily.

I am asking to see if the Ford Techs out there know of any TSB's etc. relating to fuel economy. Or if Ford engineers know of any programming updates or an alternate fuel map that the PCM may switch to after a few miles of break in.

First thing to check is your odometer, either against mile post markers, 10 miles is best, or a gps...they could be off due to oversize tires..

The next thing is the quality of gas your using....E85 will lower your mileage by as much as 30%..

What state are you in? California adds oxygen, don't ask me how, but it lowers your mileage...

they also have what they call winter gas that bad for mileage..

I am not a Ford Tech but I am a FSR for Strykers, basically I am a professional mechanic.

I also own a 3.7l F150 2wd mine is extended cab not 4 door. I live in El Paso which is 4000 ft up and this matters. I am not sure of your elevation but my Jetta TDI lost 5 mpg from seattle to here and my crown Vic did as well.

My F150 has averaged 16mpg in town for most of the time I have owned it. I have owned it only in El Paso so I expect it would get more at lower elevation.

I took it on a 600 mile trip and I got 22 mpg with it full of people and camping gear. I was impressed since at lower elevation this would increase. I had a bed cover on the trip too.

I put in a K&N air filter just 3 days ago and have monitored my MPG and I am now averaging 18.5 in town. 2.5 better than I was getting. I am considering lowering the truck a few inches to help with fuel mileage but I have not yet. I do have FX wheels and tires on mine instead of the stock tires. These are wider than my stock ones were.

I'm not a ford tech, but i own an F250 5.4l triton, and have been following the new f150's on F150forum.com. I know a lot of guys complaining about poor mileage. Nobody has been able to get the "estimated" mileage out of their trucks, even after tuning. The tests done to determine this EPA Mileage was derived in the 70's, and since then, driving styles have changed significantly. I read an article that stated there can be up to 30% error in some estimates. i would not be surprised if we see a new test scheme being rolled out within a few years.

I was a ford Tech up to last month, I havent heard of any problems with fuel economy. I just checked for TSB's or recalls and nothing so far. I know they had a couple updates for the new 6.7's tranny shifting but nothing so far.

The TT we were selling them like hot cakes and had no real complaints beside a driveshaft vibration on takeoff.

That sticker milage is done in a controlled environment. Inside on a flat level surface with a constant speed. There are no hills, speeding up or slowing down, no wind factor and no traffic. In other words the sticker milage is under ideal conditions that simply do not exist in real life.

    Hi Henderx,

This type of information is provided by a certified Ford technician once the vehicle has been properly diagnosed.
