My son had his first phone at the age of 9 which i didn't approve of really (it was a pressie from friends), however it only really became a necessity when he started secondary school, last year.
But to be fair his first phone was only about £20 and the only thing it did was text. Now he has one that play music, takes photos etc.
I would say from the age of 10 onwards is the appropriate age but kids nowadays can be pressured into getting phones really early and they must also be iphones or blackberrys - Not even I have one of these phones!!

I think it is getting to be too young nowadays...but I'd say about middle school. So maybe 13 (depending on maturity level). Or a parent can wait til the child says "But Mom, EVERYONE else has a cel phone. I can't send them any texts." Then wait about 9-12 months before giving them a cel phone.

12/13, but kids these day have iPhones & Blackberries. Kids don't need smartphones at 12 years old. Kids should at least have a prepaid monthly phone, like Virgin Mobile or Boost Mobile.

I got my son his first cell phone when he was 8; it was a Nokia Engage, so it was more like a portable game console rather than just a phone, yet he could use it to call me in case of need.

At whatever age they start driving. At that point there is the possibility of a car accident, a car breaking down, or getting very lost, so it is important that they have one.

13 year is the best age, as your child becomes a teen with lots of changes mentally and physically !
