Using humor to hide depression/anxiety?

Is this a common thing? I constantly use humor to hide my depression and anxiety, even though I really am extremely anxious the whole time, I only appear the hyperactive, excitable but happy and fun loving person who is always joking around that others see. Its like my mind is moving at a million miles an hour. Nobody really suspects anything (as far as I know) even though I am deeply unhappy and suffering. Its like I just want to make people laugh, I'm always really afraid of hurting people or disrespecting them. I don't want to burden them or make them feel sorry for me. Then I come home after school and am just exhausted and depressed I suppose. Throughout all of this I am extremely self conscious I suppose you would say. Its kind of hard to explain why I do this, why do I do this? Is this a common defense mechanism of sorts?

Update:

At the moment I don't even know if I'm depressed, I'm just extremely exhausted.

Update 2:

I wish I was able to get a good nights sleep.

I feel the same way as you. On the outside I was a happy teenager who never had any problems. I'd get home and sleep. I never told anyone and then as I wrote down the sad stuff i became depressed. I think you should tell someone how you feel. A close friend or a parent. When I told my parents I felt a lot better.
