HBO and other sex driven channels?
I understand that sex is one of the key aspects of the human experience. In film school they teach that every film and show has a source of pleasure, I.e. One of the five aspects that control all of our motivations and actions. I don't usually watch HBO or any of those channels, but I have viewed their line up because without fail these channels kill the Emmys and television award shows every year, so I want to see what is so great about them. I understand the shows are more direct in their approach, but sex rules almost all those shows, and it stops being artistic and just plain pornographic. I hate when things resort to pointless sex scenes or blood shed if it is not needed, and I may be a minority on that, but none of what I've seen has impressed me or made those channels seem artistically legitimate. Seems like it is a lot of nonsense. Does anyone agree, or have a difference of opinion? I just want to understand why shows like those are o praised.

I have a difference in opinion, I love HBO, Showtime and AMC. With HBO specifically, I do think you're correct to an extent. I do feel at times they're too gratuitous with nudity, but part of their success is because HBO is not bound by the same constraints to attract advertisers as are the advertiser-supported networks. That leaves HBO more able to take chances with programming, as well as develop shows that appeal to smaller audiences.
Whereas if you look at other broadcasters such as ABC/NBC/Fox etc which did not have this subscription cash to spend.
Moreover, revenue is made on how many viewers tune in - for example American Idol (sadly) averages about 20-30 million viewers a show on Fox, whereas a show like say Boardwalk Empire averages about 3 million. These shows would only work on subscription channels and not on network channels. Its the same here in the UK, which is a sad state to be in, but intelligent TV is always trumped over by the 'for-the-masses' TV.
I'm not saying every TV show is brilliant on HBO (hate True Blood), and I'm pretty certain AMC will take over in a few years ts achieved the status HBO holds (and perhaps even surpassed it), in about 1/10 of the time. The Walking Dead, The Killing, Breaking Bad, Mad Men are just of their recent titles and some of the best shows on television right now. Also, HBO has three shows going on with an 'incest theme' somewhere in the sub-plots which I find really unnecessary. In Game of Thrones it slightly makes sense because they're furiously staying true to the books and the author's done a lot of research on the idea...but it was just annoying in Boardwalk.
Sure HBO has sex but also a heaping helping of REALISM. The camera doesn't shy away from gore, or nudity, or cursing. None of those would be possible on network television. But all of them are there, in abundance, in an HBO show. They're actually a vital part of making Game of Thrones believable. This show portrays medieval life, in all its glory and all its filth. And by not shrinking from the more brutal or nasty or whorish parts of medieval life, Game of Thrones becomes intensely believable without even trying. It says "Here! Here is the world we are building. We won't sugar-coat it for you and we won't turn away. It's up to you to watch it grow. Or don't. Either way, here it is."
This is a big part of why, like you said, "without fail these channels kill the Emmys and television award shows every year"

Because they are not ONLY sex scenes or blood sheds as you said. They usually have really good plot lines and cast, especially because they are also realistic when it comes to characterization... You should try to watch some of those shows to have a better opinion, and stop watching when one of those scenes comes up, like changing channel just for the scene...
