I agree with Michelle's answer.....
1) Your bank. You do business with them, they already have all your necessary private info, so they're likely to give you your FICO score at no cost to you.
2) myFico.com, using myFico directly won't put any ding on your credit report for the inquiry (a ridiculous notion IMHO). I was just at that website and they're offering a 'Free Trial' for 10-days... you must cancel the subscription within 10-days or you will be billed the monthly charge. Thus, you must give them your credit card info. I've put that link below.
3) creditkarma.com is a very good, well known, trusted site and it is at no cost.
Bottom line - assuming you have a bank acct, checking/savings, go to them; this way you won't have to have your SSN or credit card number floating around at any other sites.

By safest do you mean reliable? The only place that will disclose your true score is when you apply for a loan such as a car or a mortgage. Once you do that you are putting a ding on your credit. If you are looking for a ballpark I would go to www.myfico.com/12. They will give you 2 out of 3 scores and give you the reasons for any problems on your credit report. Myfico will not ding your credit.

Many banks give it for free to their customers. I get a free one from my bank (City Bank), although i'm not sure if it's FICO.
The best place to get it is myFICO.com, but it's not free. It costs ~$20 per month. myFICO.com is owned by Fair Issac, and is the only official place to get a real FICO score.
You can also buy FICO scores at Equifax & Transunion, but it will be their version of FICO. Experian no longer sells FICO to consumers, only their new Vantage score.
There is also CreditKarma. You can get it for free. If not FICO but is very correlated to it (withing 50 points). You can get there a free credit score monitoring as well, and a good Score simulator.
