History buffs? why do you think you know anything?
I really hate that term. Why do idiots who watch history channel or participate in re-enactments or play dungeons and dragons feel like they can debate an actual historian about medieval history? Guess what I can bring down the thunder of years of actual research to your three books and dorksploring. I don't debate scientists on science because I understand they know it better than me. I don't debate physicists because I havent studied the nature of the physical universe. I don't care if you got an A in world history. I got a 3.7 for 6 years. Guess what? That means I know my field better than your wannabe jouster ****. Why do folk feel they know history better than historians when they have seen some outdated documentaries that used questionable sources and read a few Wikipedia articles. That is called trivia.

I have been studying English History for about 35 years. I have done this on my own and have not attended formal classes. This makes me a history buff. It also means I have the ability to discuss what I have learned with anyone who would care to. To be a historian, there infers formalized training.
I have also studied some philosophy, physics, and metaphysics. This also gives me the ability to talk about these things.
Just because the amount of knowledge may be less on a subject, does not mean the interest and quest for more knowledge is lacking.
Instead of looking down on the people who know less, try to educate them instead. Knowledge should be shared. If they have a fact wrong, correct them.

I am pretty sure you can refer to a historian as a history buff, a history buff is just someone who knows a decent amount of historical data and are interested in it. I am very near the of my History GCSE course and I am interested in history. I have absorbed a colossal amount of information in the past two years of my course and I am interested, doesn't that make me buff? I consider myself to be a mythology buff who has read books on the subject avidly since I was eight. I know Aztec, Inuit, Greek, Roman, Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, Teutonic, Mayan and Welsh, I also know my English folk lore very well. And I love it all, am I buff? Why does that have to be such an unpleasant concept to you? I don't do it professionally because I'm still at high school but why would you want to insult those with knowledge if they don't do it as a career path. Seems silly to me, but hey, I could wrong :)

properly I spent 4 years at college to get a historical past/Archeaology degree and that i'm in touch in historical past coaching in England. i might in no way declare to be an expert as there is a few distance too plenty to understand. I come directly to this communicate board to attempt to help out with genuine questions relatively than finished someones term paper for them. I definitely have in no way jousted (will no longer be able to experience a horse), yet i'm honest with a sword, mace, awl, sling, crossbow and longbow. the place do I slot in?

Because these people are generally idiots and think they know everything. They are also not likely to take any criticism because they are, as stated early, idiots. And therefore it is impossible to argue with them.

All "history" has a measure of bullsh!t to it unless you have live footage of what went on. As no one does, much is left to guesswork and revisionism.

"Why do folk feel...etc."?
May be they live a truly boring, meaningless existence, so they need to fell better about themselves?
I am only asking.
