You usually go straight from Basic to Airborne. Jump school teaches just that: how to jump (5 times) safely from an airplane and consolidate your gear and your unit once on the ground. 3 weeks long, fun though.

Does he get to go home after basic and before Airborne School? Depends on where he goes to Basic and what his MOS is....either way cut the umbilical cord already. If he goes to any place except Fort Benning he will probably get a chance to go home after AIT and before he starts Airborne School.

As for what he will learn? He will learn how to put a parachute on, rig is equipment (but not really, he'll learn that at his unit) what the procedures are in the aircraft (which he will be told to forget 40% of what he learned because that is not how they are done in an active airborne unit), and how to properly exit, steer his parachute and land (all of which he will have to unlearn once he gets to a unit and relearn how to do it right).
