There is a song with the opposing viewpoint by Toby Keith; "I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then."
Your quote is basically the old man's lament. If I knew 30 years ago what I know now I could really have loved the girls. In the song by Radin he is implying he didn't know the girl loved him or what to do about it if he did, but he does now and he is hoping it is not too late.

It is about a man in love who knows he needs to just jump and go for it because she is the perfect girl for him. In the beginning of the song he is planning on loving her from afar and is going to take his time in "jumping in the cold water" But, then at the end after he finally does take a leap of faith he realizes how much time he has wasted. And that instead of all the other experiences he has had while waiting to take his chance. He would've rather been with her.
