Asking a girl out via facebook?

So theres this girl i think i like and i'd like to get to know her more, i've seen her a couple of times this year unfortunately the boys and girls school is separated and we only get together a few times a year for events. We talk often on facebook and she teases me i tease her back e.t.c sometimes we talk 2-3 hours at a time. So, i know i'm seeing her at the schools 'formal' dinner in a couple of weeks. But it would be hard to ask her out if i'm not sitting opposite her and the chances of that will be slim as the seats are randomly allocated besides that i don't know when i'm next seeing her face to face, so what should i do? Should i just ask her out over facebook (if so how) or do you guys have any advice of things i could do at this dinner in terms of getting her in a comfortable situation (not surrounded by everyone) to ask her out?

Update:

And i know this sounds stupid but seeing as i've had so little 'face' time with her, how can i tell she likes me mainly from my facebook chats? I mean we spoke the few times i have seen her but those have been few and far between

Facebook? What are you, 13? Facebook is totally impersonal. If you want to ask her out, grow a pair, and ask her IN PERSON. You can get much more information about what she is thinking by seeing her face than by sending a message on Facebook.

Ask her on Facebook to go out, but don't mention that it's a date yet. Then once you're out and with her in person then you can perhaps surprise her and that and tell her it's a date.
