Well - it would help if we knew why you were going and where you were going. There are really three different Peru's..... Lima is a big cosmopolitan area like many - very upscale and modern in areas and very impoverished and crime-riddled in other areas. Although the country would like for Lima to be a tourist destination (all flights are forced to go through Lima) it really has little to offer tourists - some interesting museums and some good restaurants, so if you have to go on business it is not bad.

However, the other two parts of Peru are what attracts 99% of the visitors. The Andes around Cusco have a rich history and a rich culture with awesome ruins at Macchu Pichu, Pisac and other nearby towns in the "Sacred Valley". It is a fantastic place to visit. The altitude is hard on you at first (plan a few days of rest at first if you can), and you should have Hepatitis A vaccine before going here or anywhere else in Peru.

The upper Amazon Basin requires a flight from Lima to Iquitos. It is awesome - one-third of all species on the planet live in the Amazon, and there are neat eco-lodges located within hours of Iquitos - many of these will have someone pick you up at the airport and transfer you to the river where they will take you to their lodges. A trip into the Amazon requires planning and preparation with a travel clinic or knowledgable physician. You will need Yellow Fever vaccination and malaria-preventive medicine - and lots of bug spray. It is well worth it! A good example of such a lodge is at www.perujungle.com I stayed there and had a very good experience.

    Have a great trip!

Also - if you need transportation from the airport in Lima to a hotel, check out the transfers at Viator.com - for about $15 they had someone pick me up at the airport at 11PM - holding up a sign with my name, he helped me with my luggage and drove me to the hotel, and he spoke good English. Well worth it - also it was helpful to have that prepaid so I didn't have to worry about changing currency late at night or whether or not a taxi driver would accept dollars. (The Viator driver was happy to accept a $5 US tip.) It was an exceptional service that I do not mind promoting...

Stephen gave a very good answer.

However, Stephen seemed to exclude the Pacific coast of Peru, one of the 3 parts of Peru. The whole coast of Peru has world-class surf spots. Northern Peru, where we live, has sun 300 days of the year, warm weather and beaches without end - an excellent place to relax at the end of your vacation and pick up a great tan, mellow out in the sun, and learn to surf or kite surf.

Peru was named top destination for cuisine this year. National Geographic lists it was among the top ten travel destinations. Machu Picchu is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and in the top three best destinations for travel.

There's a lot to see. As Stephen says, the Upper Amazon jungle itself covers more than half of Peru and is amazing.

Peru is great. the food is fabulous. don't carry too much cash at once, unfortunately things in certain parts are not safe. i'm from there and i just got back a month ago. it really depends on where in Peru you are going. if you go to Lima, the capital, go to the beaches...you'd have to go a bit south for nice clean beaches. also if you are in Lima visit "el parque de los gatos" which is a park with hundreds of cats, really cool.

if you are in the mountains there are also millions of places to visit. peru has a huge rich history. i've never been to the jungle parts myself but had family that lived there and loved it.

eat everything you can, the food is the best.

don't give too much money to the kids asking on the streets---they will follow you around

    the people are very friendly

    lima is very modern

    enjoy

you do not say the position you're vacationing from. extremely i'm off to Brasil for a month a week on Sunday. My spouse has kinfolk in Sorocaba (Sao Paulo State). i'm vacationing from Scotland myself. Sao Paulo is vast & like verywhere you should take care interior the city. Pay particular interest on the underground as pickpockets are rife there. i have in user-friendly words visited Sampa (Sao Paulo) once, however it regarded that with the most proper precautions it could be a superb position to visit.
