SKYRIM: When joining Imperial Legion (or Storm Cloakes) do you have to look the part?

Can I get rid of the gear they give me? Do I have to wear it?

    No, you don't have to wear what they give you.

    I've played on both The Imperial Legion and Storm Cloak sides, and it is not required (nor are they any extra perks to my knowledge) in wearing what they give you, other than for cosmetic purposes.

    Furthermore, if you started the storm cloak question line and enter an Imperial Legion encampment in the wilderness while wearing Imperial Legion armor, they will still attack on site for being a Storm Cloak, not being fooled. The opposite is also true.
