    A name for one who reads the readings at Mass.

    It is a ministry position where a layperson (not of the clergy) reads the Scripture readings (first and second readings) at mass. This excerpt is taken from "Mass Revision":

    "Properly speaking, a [lector] is formally instituted to proclaim the Scripture readings at Mass. In casual speech, a person who is not formally instituted as a lector but performs this function by temporary deputation."
