It encouraged teaching to tests, cheating on scores, and mainstreaming students who struggled into classrooms where they had very little chance of succeeding unless the teachers focused on them to the detriment of the other students. It turned special education teachers into glorified aides who had little chance to really help students in the 10 minutes or so that they might have at the end of a period, with 4-5 special needs students in each class. It required teachers to spend an untold amount of time trying to simplify materials for the least able students.
My mother was a special education teacher for most of her teaching life. She taught countless numbers of students to read, to do simple arithmetic, to learn and retain information BECAUSE she had all day with her students and could give them each the specialized attention and materials they needed. They did not spend 40 minutes or so listening to a teacher whose material was beyond their ability to comprehend in the ways and at the speed of other students.
NCLB takes a cookie cutter approach to education while pretending to do the opposite. Like it or not, not all students can perform at so-called grade level, and when teachers have large numbers of the students who can't mixed in with other students, how are they to meet the needs of all students in the time allotted?

I believe that the "No Child Left Behind" is a hindrance to school districts as all students must abide by one set of guidelines. I believe that this has set up children to learn to take tests and not to think creatively which is the main source of our country's competitiveness over other countries. In the years since NCLB has been enacted our scores have actually decreased compared to other nations, so obviously we are doing something wrong. It has always been my contention that the act was made to suit certain businesses that have much to gain from our tax dollars going to education.

It was a terrible idea that not only didn't help students it actually held them back. It was never fully funded and the testing system that was put in place was different from state to state.

More aptly called the no child gets ahead it stopped good students from succeeding and did not help bad students much either.
