Is Long Island City relatively safe?

My sister and her hsuband are planning a trip to NYC but is looking for a good area to stay. She's thinking fo a hotel in Long Island City at 11-01 43rd Avenue. Just wondering if this is an ok area to be walking around in when getting to and from the subway stop to the toursity parts of Manhattan. She's asking for my advice cause I've been to NY once but I don't really know much.

Sorry if this sounds pretty ignorant but for someone living in the middle of the Canadian praries NY can be pretty over whelming. So many different areas so its hard to get a read on what to avoid and whats ok.

Thanks so much for any help

The area has a lot of industry, but generally, I'd say it's safe to walk to the subway station at Queensboro Plaza or possibly 21st Street/Queensbridge (i'd choose the former) to reach Manhattan.

I hope this information was very helpful.

The "Z" Hotel. It's actually a new hotel that opened up in the area and is on the trendy side. I know party promoters in there :). The hotel in itself is nice!

I believe they have a shuttle that takes you to the Queensboro Plaza subway station (N,R, 7) or the Vernon Blvd-Jackson Avenue station (#7), I would go on that because while in the day it's mainly factories and auto shops around there and okay to deal with, it gets pretty desolate at night once the factories/auto shops close and not necessarily a safe area especially if you're tourists and lost.

And to that...DO NOT WALK UP ON 21st Street heading to the bridge! That will take you to one of the worst housing projects in the city, Queensbridge Houses. There is a subway there but for tourists....AVOID!!!!!

While it is a bit off the main drag in the location you will find that the hotel offers free transportation in and out of Manhattan every half hour. The walk to the E train at 44th Dr and 21st is about 8 minutes and is perfectly great during the day. There are plenty of cabs available to take you to and from the hotel if the hotel transportation doesn't work. Don't overthink it; the ratings on tripadvisor.com are great and there many good places to eat In Long Island City and nearby Astoria.

That hotel is a few blocks from the subway and you will have to walk along a bridge at night.
