1998 VW Jetta: Decent Car?
1998 VW Jetta K2
Automatic Trans. New tires and brakes. Needs shocks, mounts, and struts. 94K miles. Power windows/locks. Heeated seats. Tinted. Silver exterior. One previous minor accident.
A friend is offering it for $1200. I hear older VW Jettas need a lot of maintenance and I'm not a car guy nor am I swimming in cash to replace things. Is this a good deal or am I gonna fall into a money pit?
Any one driving one of these who is will to offer information on their personal experiences with the car would be GREATLY appreciated.
TY
I forgot to mention the current is going to replace the struts, mounts, and shocks before selling it to me. Would that make a difference? How long do those last?

Jettas are great cars but unfortunately they are very costly to repair. if you can get the car for more like $700 dollars you could be better off. shocks struts and mounts could run you about 1200 plus if you have a shop install them you have to pay labor. If it were me i would pass on the deal

Jettas are geat cars, and one of the least expensive to maintain.
That is because there are so many of them, that lots of independents make and sell replacement parts and do service on them.
If you have to do to a dealer for parts and service, then they are very expensive. But that is true with all cars. Only with VW you do not have to.
First concern however is that around 90k miles is the first timing belt change interval.
That will cost you about $300 right off.
However, 94k miles is not an old car, no matter what the year is.
So there should not be any major concerns yet.
Struts, mounts, and shocks should not need being done. And if they are that shot at such low miles, it makes you wonder how he drove it. But the struts include the springs, and they should never wear out. The shock are part of the structs that reduce bounces later after a bump, so are not really essential. They just make it slightly more comfortable.
The price is very good.
The miles are extremely low.
I would take it fast as soon as you have a garage you trust check it out.
I would say the price should be more like $2500 to $3500

My sister has a 98 jetta glx with the vr6 and the only thing she has had an issue with is the clutch that im changing now (Taking a break) and her cars at 150,000 miles. just change oil every 3,000 miles and do the air filter and breaks every 8,000 or so and you will be fine
