How do I upgrade my home theater connection to HDMI?

We have a plasma TV, 6 years old.

It is NOT an HDMI connection.

If I buy a new HDMI receiver, how hard will it be to connect to our tv (connection is in the wall)?

Thanks!

Update:

Yes, the new receiver has HDMI but not the tv. I'm just hoping I don't have to cut into the wall to change a cable or something. This is for satellite tv.

AV receivers (hdmi receiver is a type of AV receiver) primary purpose by definition is to amplify sound from a multitude of possible audio sources as well as route video signals to your TV from various sources. so your hdmi receiver should have inputs and outputs. some of the input and output could be hdmi, composite, component, digital audio, etc (just look those terms up if you don't know what they are). so you take your source video and connect it to the hdmi input and route the video through the receiver output to the tv ( the output could whatever your tv can support, composite, component, or s-video).

Your details are a little confusing. Is this a cable receiver? What do you mean the connection is in the wall? I assume the reciever has HDMI connection and the TV doesn't. If the receiver has HDMI connection it should also have component (red, green, blue). Your TV should have one as well. Connect them using component cables.
