In photography, is it appropriate to smudge rather than pixilate the middle finger gesture?
Most of the time it gets pixilated, like that Super Bowl singer in the news coverage. But in this picture,

(Dustin Pudry takes a picture of Jack Pudry and "Tead") the editor smudged the middle fingers instead. That seems wrong to me, somehow.

I have seen this many times and still do not understand it.. GOD and one teaches another such childishness. and lack of respect for authority. as far as pixilate and smudges whatever. bad influences are never cute. Some times it really hurts the photographers feelings. and brings the photographer down . One thing you cannot do, is smudge the persons thinking thats flipping you off, assuming they are thinking the f u word.. in photography as in this instance you can see the person is posing for the photo they are not running away , so they just flip the photographer off , it makes ya wanna never take photos or own a camera if ur gonna do stupid stuff..

That is really a social or artistic question. It simply depends on your own perspective. Your perspective obviously does not coincide with that of the editor.

MIA is a " singer " ? LMAO !
I'd photoshop his / her whole finger out. Doing the finger shows a lack of class.

I think it's idiotic that we have to censor a silly finger in the first place.

depends on the individuals/organisations... they choice the way it is dealt with... pixelation is faster...
