What is the point in a non custodial interrogation, particularly one conducted over the phone?

I was called by an officer over 3 months ago. Yes I confirmed it was a real officer by hanging up, googling the precinct and calling directly.

When I requested to not speak to the cop w/out a lawyer, he became aggravated and a little hostile. He told me he has proof and I'd definitely be charged.

Haven't heard anything since, but my question is-- what was the point of this? Why didn't the officer come visit me in person and arrest me? If anything he was saying was true, he would have my address..and I was home when he called.

The accusation was of the Misdemeanor level.

Why would an officer choose a non custodial interrogation over a custodial one?

Update:

Teekno-- So how come they don't ALWAYS just use the non custodial method?? That's the part that's so very confusing. I understand the perks (not having to read rights,) but if that's all perfectly legit and legal, why not always do it that way??

Stuart-- 2. The SOL is certainly not SEVERAL years on a Misdemeanor charge, lol. 3. They knew how to reach me over three months ago but I don't really have stable roots in this area. As the cop learned upon dialing my cell phone number which is out of state, I'm originally from another state and have stronger ties there. I may go back at any moment, if I haven't already... Not specifically to avoid this charge, but just bc I haven't purchased a home in this area or anything stable. 4. If grand juries only assemble once a year, then how come ppl sometimes get charged with crimes just a couple weeks or months after being discovered? I haven't even been arrested.

Update 2:

Mitt-- no no no no no, you misunderstood. I was NOT in a different state. I have a cell phone number, the area code of which is of a different state. I have ROOTS in a different state, but I have been living in the same jurisdiction/county as the cop who called me. I had been living there for over a year. However, I did not buy a home. I am renting an apartment. If what the cop said to me was true, he would have had my apt address. And I was there when he called.

Update 3:

Mitt-- "if they want you, they will get you" lmao--how naive and delusional you are!

Go ahead--report me, everybody. Report me to yahoo answers. I'm shaking.

In a custodial interrogation, he is required to read you your rights and remind you that you can have a lawyer present. In a non-custodial interrogation, he's not required to do that.

Sometimes people will say things that implicate themselves. That's why they do it.

You flatter yourself. Thinking that yours is the most important case the police have to deal with is a little foolish, especially since

    1) the charge is a misdemeanor with probably a fine and probation as the probable outcome

    2) the statute of limitations for prosecuting you is probably several years, so there's no real hurry to work your particular case

    3) the police apparently know how to get in touch with you, so they're not particularly worried about you slipping through the dragnet

    4) your case may have gone to the grand jury for indictment, and they tend to be assembled for a year at a time, and may not have reviewed your case yet

Non-custodial interviews often lead to as much or more information than custodial ones do. They may not have wanted to waste the gasoline driving over to pick you up.

What is wrong with you? Are you really that obsessed, or are you doing this as a little joke, or are you stupid?

The reason he interviewed on the phone was because he ws in a different state....We know that because you told us in one of the hundred versions you have laid on us.

He didn't choose a non-custodial interview, that is just common sense. You don't drive all over the place for a stupid a harassment charge. It's not like it's a violent crime, now, is it?

If the cops read this, they will know that you are guilty of harassment, but you seem like some kind of nut case as it is.

And, it isn't like he has to arrest you for you to be punished, is it? Because you have obsessed over this crap for "over 3 months". You must be constantly looking over your shoulder waiting for the cops to nab you. You even try to play coy and cute and hide where you are in some of your posts, "I'm here now, but I could go elsewhere tomorrow", and the like. hey, if they want you, they will get you.

You need to be reported to YA, by everyone. You are harassing the YA community under different accounts with the same repeated question.
