1993 silverado getting 6.5 mpg!!!!!?

My 93 silverado with 5.7L is getting 6.5 mpg. I changed the plugs and all that stuff and it didnt help at all. Its costing me almost $80 to drive 150 miles, i cant afford to keep doing this. What would be causing the motor to suck so much gas? The truck is stock except for the exhaust, its straight piped. I heard from other people with the same motor i should be getting around 12-14 mpg. please help, thanks.

I dont get it. It came from trhe factory with a tuned exhaust system and a computerized injection system that was the best thing happening at that time. Someone has screwed that up and you apparently are paying the price for it. do you suppose the missing sensors and cat and other tuned miszzsing components might make a difference in performance and power? I have a 95 sububan 4x4 that gets better fuel mileage than yours too. good luck with that.

I need a lot more info about this truck to be of any help. How many miles on the engine? was the routine maintenance schedule kept up to date? Were all the filters ever changed such as air and fuel? What are your driving habits like? Have you ever thought of having a dyno tune performed to get the most out of the engine as far as economy goes? That straight pipe exhaust may play a part in the gas mileage too. The O2 sensor may be worn old or dirty sending the improper signal to the ecm to correct the amount of air /fuel ratio. There may be a missing sensor from the exhaust pipe that goes to the catalytic converter too and do you have a check engine light always on? need to address a lot of these problems and alterations before you can see any improvement in fuel economy. And finally your driving habits and over sized tires all play a significant part with gas mileage.

One: Have you checked for a flippin gas leak???

2: The fuel filter could be a complete piece of crap.

3: The exhaust has nothing to do with it. (per se...*u mentioned "straight piped")

4: When you changed the plugs did you change the wires too? Were the plugs fouled out horribly? Did you change the air filter?

    5. Back to the fuel filter and the lines. Sounds like you need to check for a clogged line somewhere.

    6. Do You Actually Watch The Pump Meter Turn Around When You Pay for Your Gas? You could be getting shorted.

7.. Go get a small car like my friends 88 Honda. We just went on a 87 mile round trip for only $9 Bux!

edit_ the other poster s/n mailbox is right, check that oxygen censor for certain.
