Going the casino to play poker for the first time (in real life) alone?

Hey,

Im 20 and ive been playing poker online for 2 years now. Today Im off and rather fancy going to a real casino to play poker. Ive already read about the general etiquette around the table.

My questions relate to what I should actually expect? Im going on my own too, would that look odd? I also have a limit of £40 as its my first time at physical, competitive poker, am I likely to find tables with blinds to suit that bankroll?

Also Im quite introver and any so-called "banter" round the table is likely to knock me off form. How can I guard against it?

Cheers

Everyone one else will be there alone so don't worry. The banter at the table is nothing like you see on TV. It's just people who have been there for many hours and some of them will be eating.

It will be fun for you but not what you expect. Enjoy!!

I agree that 40 Isn't much, but it might be good for your first time. Don't worry about going by yourself, many people do. Although, if you're feeling nervous about going for the first time, have a friend with you might relax you and make it a more enjoyable experience.

The first time can be kind of intimidating. A casino is a big place with lots of noise and distraction and lots of people, but poker rooms, as least the better ones, are usually kind of separate from the main casino floor, and usually less noisy and chaotic. At least the ones near me in the US are like that. When you first enter the poker room you'll find a desk where you can ask about what games are available. If it's crowded you might have to wait for a seat. In some casinos you can buy chips at the table, but in some you have to go to the cashier's cage before you sit down. If you have any questions or are ever unsure what to do, just ask. I've found casino employees, for the most part, to be friendly and willing to help out. They're used to first time players, so don't worry about asking what you might think is a dumb question.

As for banter, I've seen players that talk constantly, and players who never say a word. At the lower limit tables, you might find that the regulars know each other, and the dealers and banter back and forth. If at any time you feel uncomfortable, or if the person next to you is constantly trying to engage you in conversation, you can always request a table change, if there's a seat available at another table.

Just remember, playing in a real casino is different than playing online. With your small starting bankroll, you'll want to play tight, at least at first until you've seen how the others at the table play. The drinks are free, but stay away from the alcohol, and don't forget to tip the waitresses and the dealers.

    Good luck, and have fun!

£40 at an on-line poker room wouldn't be bad. You could sit at a very low stakes table and not worry.

£40 at a live casino is a real gamble. You simply shouldn't worry about ANY of the stuff you're worrying about. This is going to be a craps shoot for you.

You say you've been playing on-line poker for 2 years. Is that with REAL money? If so, have you profited?

You almost certainly mean "play" money, and if you do mean real money, you've likely lost money.

Don't worry about being an introvert. Poker is the perfect game for you. If you don't want to talk with folks, then don't talk with them. If you're playing at a LIMIT game, so called "banter" isn't going to make any difference anyway. If you're playing NO-LIMIT, then someone could try to intimidate you during a big decision. Just try your best to make the right decisions at the moment.

Believe me - with only £40, "banter" is not what you've got to worry about. You're either going to get some great cards, or you're not. Play extremely tight/aggressive if you can, try to get all your money in the middle when you've got the better hand, then cross your fingers and hope that Diamond doesn't hit the River!

Oh, a couple more things - First, it doesn't look odd to go to a casino on your own. Second, you will probably find tables where the minimum buy-in is somewhere around £40. That's why I tell you this is going to be a craps shoot for you. You will be buying in for somewhere around the minimum buy-in.

In my experience, most on-line gamblers get murdered when playing in person. It's really a completely different game. My advice: Have fun. If you want, ignore everyone else's chatter, play your own hand and concentrate. At any table, with a small stake, first time out, expect to lose everything you bring to the casino in short order. For the first 10 outings, your goal should be to have fun and learn. When you have lost your stake, walk away from the table, have a drink and go home. Whatever you do, do not go shy or use any credit card/ATM funds. After a dozen or so days like this, you will know if you can play consistently and come out without losing your shirt. Remember that poker is really not about the mathematics, its about human behavior. Every table will have one or two sharp players and a number of fools. The goal is to seperate the fools from their money and survive the efforts of the sharp players who seek to eviserate you. They will do so slowly and patiently; while you hardly notice.

I started going when I was 18. I was in almost the exact same situation as you. The banter is fine just take the wins and losses with a little bit of manners. Never react to bad beats because that is what will make you a target. Sunday to Thursday you will get the slightly more serious games. It depends where you are going. For example in the scottish gala casinos they can have 100 as the average buy in and then it increases as the night goes on. However a low limit would suggest the tournaments. Check your local casinos for their Thursday night tournaments and their type and buy ins. Online to live can be difficult and not always the best thing. The best example is isildur1 he is not the best at live games and has not had much success but consistent high wins and loses online have been better for him. Best of luck :)

Well just know that there are gang members waiting to steal your money outside of the casino. After leaving make sure you make sure noone is following you home and always have your cellphone. I'd zig zag out of the casino if i were you and walk fast while going to your car. It common for poker players to get robbed or even worse so be careful

"Also Im quite introver and any so-called "banter" round the table is likely to knock me off form"

Depends when you go -- if you go on a weekday you might get a more "serious game"

But on weekends you get some of the drunks and they play crazy..
