Who owns the copywrite?

You commission an article to be written about a certain subject for publication. The article is written and paid for. Someone writes to the publisher for permission to use the article. Who owns the copywrite?

    Copyright, not copywrite.

    The author of any written work owns the copyright. When this work is published, the contract usually stipulates what rights are being sold. This may include handing over all rights in perpetuity, or it may be restricted in various ways.

    The author owns the copyright unless he signed it over to you or someone else.

    This should be stated in the contract. If it isn't, the author does.
