Is there any special preparation in feeding my Husky raw chicken?

I am transitioning my 2 year old Husky to a raw food diet. I am starting slow on the transition to try not to upset his stomach. Other than washing the chicken and chopping it into smaller pieces, is there any other preparation I should do or anything I should look out for. I am also adding a small amount of nonfat plain yogurt and some grated carrots to the mix.

Update:

@ Chachi, I'm not sure if you have researched enough on your suggestion. Dogs don't have the same immune system as humans and can tolerate the bacteria's just fine. There are actually a lot of AK Kennels, breeders and many dog and Husky owners who have been giving raw meats with chicken being one of the staples to there animals for many years. All of these people have stated the immense improvements in there dogs and have not had any issues over many years.

Also, to save anyone time. Raw bones are good for dogs. They don't splinter. They crush and digest easy. You should never give a dog a cooked bone of any kind as they can splinter and tear the stomach and some can damage their teeth.

Update 2:

@ H, Dog food wasn't even in existence until the 1950's.

so i was standing in the shower thinking ...

interrupted by a prophetic voice who informed that the stomach cannot tolerate the change that is about to take place

it was so out of context, so out of nowhere

i guess the message belongs here - unless the message is for me and it's continuing - divinely - through you.

WAIT- hold up. Who's the dog and who's the chicken? are you trying to get me to have sex with you again, A?

  • As another poster said, stainless steel bowls, and a surface that is easy to sanitize are your best bets. Prepare their chicken using hygeine methods you would if you were preparing it for yourself. In my opinion, you should only use human quality meat, but that's debatable, lol. As for bones, the only one I would watch out for are rib bones, and other thinner, smaller bones that have a sharper end. Not because I think they'll splinter, but because of the sharper end posing a potential tearing hazard. In the event you give these bones, just keep an eye on the dog to make sure they break down the whole bone, and aren't eating too fast. Bones are great for dogs, but never leave your dog alone with them (as I'm sure you know). You seem to have a pretty good grasp on the idea of raw feeding. Just make sure you add other meats, vegetables, etc... in over time, as chicken and carrots alone may not have all the nutrients your dog will need. Keep an eye out for any signs of allergies (some dogs are allergic to protein sources such as beef, pork, etc...) and adjust the dog's diet if needed. See if you can find breeders, handlers, etc... that feed raw and talk to them about how they got started, how they prepare their dogs' food, etc...

I would never give my dog raw chicken. I don't give him any people food. My vet scolded me for giving my dog human food and told me that human food can cause serious problems with their pancreas. I give my dog a good dog food so that he gets all of the nutrition that he needs. He's been on Iams since he was a puppy and he is 14 now and eating Iams for seniors. He has always been very healthy and still has a lot of puppy energy. There are a lot of good dog foods out there. You can choose one that your dog likes as dog foods now come in a sample form if you go to a pet store you can get sample sizes. Why do you want your dog to eat raw chicken?

I would use stainless steel bowls to make cleaning and sanitizing easy. Try to feed raw on a surface that's also easy to sanitize. Other than that, there's not much "special" you need to do!
