As it has been said, the term "radar detector" is pretty self explanatory. It detects radar. It doesn't detect any police cars, or any type of vehicle for that matter. Think of a smoke detector. It detects the smoke, not the fire that it is coming from. As far as do they work? Yeah they might work, but it only takes a few seconds for the radar to determine your speed. Too late for you to do anything about it. The only good they are is that they might tell you if a car ahead of you has been checked by radar giving you notice to slow down.

A radar detector only detects police radar when their radar gun is being used to clock someone's (or your) speed. Almost all police officers running radar to catch speeders these days don't just leave their radar on constantly for that very reason (because radar detectors can see radar from a mile away if it's left on constantly). They only turn on the radar when they've got you (or whoever they're clocking) in the radar gun's sights.
Therefore, if you're travelling at an absurdly high rate of speed and your radar detector starts chirping away, you've basically just been told that you've already been caught unless you just got lucky and the police officer was clocking someone ahead of you instead. With or without your radar detector though, you'd find out very quickly whether the officer saw you going insanely fast or not by whether you see a squad car lit up in your mirror.
And if you're lucky and you weren't clocked right when the detector went off while attempting a high speed run, rest assured any halfway competent officer will notice if you're travelling 50+ mph over the limit, even if you stomp on the brakes as soon as the detector goes off, and he/she will stop you on some sort of other major driving violation (like wreckless driving etc.,) even if they don't have your top speed displayed on their radar gun.

If you're going to be stupid there's no guarantee that you won't be caught speeding before you crash and kill somebody. Radar is cheap and easy to use but there are other ways to measure a car's speed.

Dude you are asking for an accident that could possibly kill you or a car with a family maybe even one that has a new born baby in it. I don't think anyone should answer this question for you.
