There have been many surveys in recent years to check on the abundance/conservation status of crocodilian species all over the tropics. Biologists and park people count them in lakes or alongside rivers. The Nile crocodile population in lake Turkana, for example, is about 14,000. But it's hard to come up with precise figures, especially if most individuals of a species are skittish.
