Are former ALTs not supposed to criticize English education in Japan?

1. No.

2. As it stands now it allows students, politicians and school officials to appear busy and conscientious -their primary goal. The current system does not teach children to appreciate English or be motivated to learn it. After all, the Japanese view foreigners and their countries as either a source of entertainment or a business opportunity, nothing else.

Much ado about nothing. That is my take.

You can talk all you want. we always do. the English education system in Japan does suck. In ES it is fun, then they go to JHS where they are drilled and hate it. They have it all mixed up and do not know what the hell they are doing. That is one of the reason why Japan does not like English much, But in order for Japanese to get better at English, Japan has to change as a whole they way they do things. The way the speak Katakana English on TV and Radio. Until That changes, it will always be the same.
