What is the best way to replace the suspension on my 2001, 1.8t Golf?

So, my 2001, four door, 1.8t VW Golf is in need of a new suspension.

Do I replace it with the suspension it had when I purchased it or (This is what I was considering) do I replace it with a 2001 GTI suspension?

If so, what is the difference in cost?

I would rather get a better suspension for my car then the one it came with.

First we need to know why you say it needs new suspension, when that normally never happens?

Was there an accident that damaged all 4 struts?

Second is that normally with wear, all you replace is shock inserts, which you can do yourself for $200 in parts, or another $200 or so for labor.

The GTI has a stiffer ride, with thicker sway bars and rear axle bar, but these are not normal replacement parts, so yours do not likely need replacing. Salvage yards might have them cheap.

The most reasonable suggestion is to just get stiffer shocks, perhaps gas filled.

You can get OEM suspension for either a Jetta GTI or Golf or your car provided its 1.8t specified due to the VR6 being heavier by a bit. The 'sport' etc suspension is a scam by VW by introducing almost immeasurable spring rates to be labeled an upgrade. If you want superior suspension with a lifetime warranty drop the money on PSS9's or KW V3 coilivers. You don't need to lower your vehicle with these all though you can. You can keep it stock height on the softest damper and have the ride of a Mercedes. Buy it comes at a cost. Unless you plan to keep this vehicle to the grave. Grab someone's stock suspension off craigslist or a place like vwvortex.com and put them in. Replacing the suspension on one of these cars is easy I figured it out when I was 16. Just be careful with the front struts. Do NOT remove te center strut nut on the top. The force of the spring behind it once unbolted has enough force to kill you. Always use spring compressors. Hopefully that helps I tred to cover everything.

VW have spent a lot of money over the years developing and improving the suspension for the Golf, so you'd be making a lot of work for no real benefit. Unless you plan on taking it on a track, just stick with the current suspension. If you do want an upgrade then get some decent after-market springs and shocks (ie. Eibach rather than G-Max) and be prepared for your insurance company to have a sulk.
