Windows error recovery, reinstall windows 7 and format old hard drive?
I built a new pc with my same old hard drive with windows 7 installed from my old pc that died. I cannot boot into windows, it keeps giving me a windows error recovery and I dont know the problem, I tried startup repair and start normally and nothing worked. Some people said since it is a new motherboard, I should reformat my old hard drive so it can be "new" to the motherboard.
How do I format my hard drive if I cant even boot into windows???? Please help. And how do I reinstall windows 7? Could I use a flash drive or burnt cd, because I dont have original cd anymore?? What about ubuntu, could that work????
PLEASE help

You will need the Windows 7 cd to do what you need to do. Booting from the cd, and choosing to install new ... during the install, you will have the option to delete the current partition and start fresh. Without the cd, you'll get no where.
And yes, when building a new pc, in most cases you have to reinstall the o/s ... unless the new pc has the same chipset(s). With Windows XP you could do a repair install and not loose your stuff. You also have the option with Windows 7, to install to the current partition, and have Windows save all of your old stuff to a new folder.
But alas .... you need the cd. And you don't need a new license. You can simply reuse your old license and reactivate once the install is done. Never had a problem doing that.

Your old installation of Windows 7 contained the drivers for your old hardware. These drivers are not compatible with your new hardware, therefore it does not work. You will have to reinstall Windows 7 on your new computer. On your old computer you had a license for Windows 7 apparently, but this was an OEM license, which means that it was only valid on your old computer. If you want Windows 7 on your newly build computer, you will have to purchase a new license for Windows 7. Ubuntu is a completely different operating system. It is not compatible with software which is intended for Windows and the other way around.

You will need to boot from your Windows 7 cd and follow the instructions. It will format and reload Windows 7.
