Why is it that in America drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store...?

... to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front.

Just wondering

Update:

I don't recall seeing a drugstore with a drive-up window in our area.

That seems to be an invitation to robbery for more so than the present situation in our area.

I live in a big city and our pharmacies don't have drive throughs. Pharmacies need a lot more space (to safely store drugs and stuff, do all those pill count outs, etc.) and since that's space the public cannot get into, they put it out of the way which is usually in the way back or off to the side out of the way. Plus pharmacies need more space for people to wait around in. Which you don't have to do to buy cigarettes or candy. Plus you don't want the front area of your store clogged up with people waiting for flu shots or to consult a pharmacist. And it used to be you didn't want any youngsters seeing you buy a new supply of condoms (but now they sell those things out in the open so it no longer applies).

My pharmacy doesn't have a drive-up, and its at the back of the store. I think it's so you will buy more as you make your way to the counter, and possibly for the exercise. There's also the robbery inhibition. Thieves are a little less likely to rob a back of the store pharmacy and risk being caught before they can make it out the front of the store.

Deliveries come to the rear of the stores. The Pharmacy is in the back for security and safety reasons. If a sick person needs medical attention, the ambulance doesn't have to block the front of the store and create more problems for the public. Also, medications are kept in a locked vault and that is generally in the rear of the store....behind the pharmacy desk!

Cigarettes are often the reason for many thieves doing a grab and run. We certainly don't want to make it easy for thieves to grab medications and peoples personal information, do we?

If a person already has an account (previously purchased prescription drugs), they can use the drive-up windows that most drug stores have. If you do not call it in or have the Dr call it in - you have to wait in your car for 30 minutes minimum or drive away and come back. Most sick people do not want to wait.

Walk-ins always tend to get faster service in my area. They often have seating in a room with glass walls for those who want to contain their germs to one area. Lots of great reading material too.

Rite Aide (pharmacy) here in this state sells cigs and they are behind the cashiers and some are $7.50 a pack and that is a heffty $75.00 a carton.

I don't think they want the over the counter meds and med appliances to take up row upon row of space in the front of the store. So they move all that to the back with the pharmancy.

The seasonal stuff is up front and the cosmetics.

Pharmacies are planned stops. Most stores will put planned purchases in the back of the store, so that you will be tempted by some other item on the way there. Yes, cigarettes are planned purchases, too, but the tobacco companies pay big money to have them in the front.

Good question. I think they want the people to walk past the goods and think about buying them while they are waiting for the prescription to be filled. We have Walgreens with drive-up windows for prescription pick up.

Call ahead to see if your prescription is ready, and then use the drive-up window to pick it up. I also think that drugstores should ban the sale of booze and tobacco products.

So that the people robbing the store have to go all the way to the front (and face the cameras) to get out.

because in america most people have at least 1 car and use the drive up window

They don't. Every one of them now days has a drive up. I do not know of ANY pharmacy that sells smokes these days.

You asked a generalized type question. Which is not the case in America. Most "drugstores" have drive trough. Then you got specific by asking about your area. Why is it you did not say that in your question? What I see is a rant. Just some one bent on complaining. Note the generalized statement about getting robbed.

Was thinking about where the pharmacies are in stores around here. Kroger, WalMart, Fred's are up front. Walgreen and CVS in in the back. All have drive through. Not a single drugstore in my area is without a drive through. Maybe you folks should change pharmacy.
