Water from the bottom always, you can tell if your AV needs water when: 1) when you pick up the pot it feels light to hold and 2) the AV's leaves are starting to droop.
Remember - the No. 1 killer of AV's is overwatering.
In addition, If I were you, I'd repot your AV, come mid-March with the following mixture:
1 part Vermiculite
1 part Peat Moss
1 part Perlite
example: 1/2 cup of each of the above, mixed together
Your AV will appreciate the soil-less mixture and thrive in it.
In addition, once a month, remove 1 to 3 of the older leaves to encourage growth.
Your AV will be happiest if underwatered.

When the surface of the soil fells dry to the touch. Never put water on the leaves. Too much water kills more plants then anything else. While the surface can feel dry, the soil around the roots need to stay somewhat moist. Good luck with your plant.

Put your finger into the soil up to your first knuckle if it feels wet don't water it. Don't get the leaves wet when you do water. They prefer to be water from the bottom so, put it in a small bowl and fill the bowl with warm water up to the rim of the plant when you see it not taking up anymore water then it has been watered enough (about 5 minutes or so)

All varities of violets will thrive in partial shade and need moist soil at all time. Water it every couple of days depending on the temperature.

Each week I lift their pots. If it feels light and empty, I water. If it feels heavy, I don't. Be sure you have a well draining pot and that you keep a water catching dish under it. After watering wait 10 minutes, then empty the under dish so the pot doesn't sit in water.

The soil should be moist but not soggy. Tap the side of the pot. If it sounds dull it has enough water. If it sounds hollow it needs watering.
