Should I take Chinese or French?

I'm considering Chinese or French for next year, but I really don't know what to take. Many people say Chinese is more widely spoken throughout the world, other people say French is. And is French more helpful and useful in the medical field? Or not really?

I just like Chinese because it looks cool with the script. Don't really know how hard it is to learn to write.

I'm proficient with both English and Vietnamese, so I think both Chinese and French are kinda familiar with me. What do you guys think? Should I go for Chinese or French?

If you want something easy while studying for the medical field, well, pick French then. Though I'm not sure if it would really help much with the medical field. I guess if you have a large number of patients that are native French speakers more so than Chinese speakers, then yes French would be better. Oh, well I guess because lots of medical and science terms look a lot like French words sometimes... I guess.

But if you want something that will be challenging, then pick Chinese :-)

Honestly, I live like right next to NYC, and I see/meet more Chinese speakers than French speakers (but French is not rare like in the midwest). Even when I went to Niagara Falls and Toronto, I found more Chinese people to talk to than French... maybe I don't look friendly to French speakers so they hide from me lol :'( And also when I lived out in the midwest, there were noooo French speaking people at alll like ever! And the only Chinese people that actually knew Chinese were found in like Chinese restaurants and that's it :/ Oh! and there's lots more free Chinese channels than French channels (at least where I live.) And in high school, I only met like 5 people that actually knew French, but like so many knew Chinese. But in college, there's a decent amount that know French ^_^. Well, at least they're both UN languages. :D

Anyway, as for French grammar, it's pretty darn the same as English. But writing is can sometimes be weird because not every letter is pronounced in a word; there's so many silent letters, argh lol. You kind of get used to it though, and so you make better guesses at how words can be spelt and whatnot. It's kind of hard to read French at first because of those silent letters, but not too much. Mm, there's also learning how to conjugate things verbs for each pronoun, but if you really try at it, then that shouldn't be a problem for a very long.

And the sounds shouldn't be too hard to do either but I think I have a better Chinese accent than French because my French teacher would always tell me my mouth isn't like too pouty enough (LoL!) when pronounce certain sounds haha :s uah! maybe it's because I have better opportunities to practice my Mandarin than my French :x

The thing is Chinese is hard and it requires devotion. If you have enough time to learn Chinese then I would definitely say go for Chinese. It's a lot more spoken and it will be very helpful in your career.

French, on the other hand, is rather easier compared to Chinese. It is not as complicated, you don't have to deal with the alphabet for example, but you also need patience. It is a beautiful language but one cannot guarantee that it will be as helpful as Chinese for you in your career.

Medical field.. humm.. then I would say go for Latin.

What I like about knowing French is that when someone speaks another Latin-based language (Spanish, Italian, Romanian...) I understand quite a lot of what they are saying.

    Good luck.

Chinese might be the hardest, however when you believe you'll do it cross forward. German is well for an individual who needs to paintings in industry and finance, however so is Chinese. French might be valuable if you're going to be handling locations in Africa or the Caribbean (industry or journey) considering many humans there talk French.

Chinese is spoken by the most people, but almost entirely limited to China and surrounding areas.

    French is mroe widely spoken.

Chinese is much harder to listen to, speak, read and write than French, it takes a lot of time and dedication to leanr

China has stronger ties to NZ than any French-speaking country. If you like languages like I do and hope to do it when your older then you can be quite successful taking Chinese. People always need Chinese-English translators who are "proficient" as you put it

    Good Luck!

Or why not learn both, pick one now and learn the other one later. Learning is life long!
