Coming off I.B. after 5 years and returning to work?

well after i had a heart bypass in 2007 i had a pretty rough time, I had to go for second surgery after 10 months as i was still in loads of pain chest wise and could not turn my head.

I was told the sternal wires needed to be removed and after that i still suffered immense back pain coupled with diagnosis of arthritis in both knees.

Up untill the Cabg i was quite busy and had never been off work more than a few weeks so i found being at home boring so much so that i decided to try and go back to work, I just finished my first 6 hour shift which involves standing the whole time and i feel absolutely terrible.

Now i've given up my benefits because i was so determined that i was going to feel better if i had something to do but OMG I'm regretting it already how can i possibly get out of this horrendous nightmare.

I'm a 60 year old guy feeling close to breakdown right now.

Any Good Sound Advice PLEASE HELP!

Update:

Thnx both Jan and Fairdo I can't possibly get signed off so quickly after starting my new job but at least after a few hours sleep I feel a bit better.

I was taken on as a disabled person so I think I will have to speak with my new employer and hope that they will understand my predicament.

sorry I cant give you both best answer

    I think that your first port of call should be your Doctor Lester. At 60 arthritis in the knee's will almost automatically rule you out for a 'standing' job. Now anyone who does not have arthritis will say if you could walk into the store or factory then obviously you can also stand at a counter or bench. Anyone that does have arthritis knows differently! I am a bit older than you and have arthritis in one hip, i walk my dog twice a day covering a mile each time and it just gives me a mild ache. If i get dragged around the shops by my wife where you are walking very slowly and just standing looking at things i get substantial pain within half an hour {and not just in my wallet !}

    Your Doctor will prpobably sign you off work.

    oh, that is so sad

    is there any way that you can get a phased return to work,

    maybe only a few hours for a few days a week

    and see if that works any better for you?

    Speak to your boss and see what he thinks, or if he can offer you a different role

    that doesn't involve standing for long periods

    I really can't offer any more advice, as I know you have been through so much
