Have you ever heard of a band called "FAT"?

I've had this album laying around the house for a while and finally decided to give it a listen. They're pretty good - I was pleasantly surprised.

Do they do anything for you?

Update:

Yay, it's Dave! :D

I'm so glad to see you back! Why don't you stick around? People miss you, you know..... Listening to yours right now and liking it. :)

Update 2:

Hi guys. :)

Beatle - I thought you and Stella might have heard of them because of your location, and Smiley, just because. It's weird how the only link I didn't put up was the one you and Lucy both knew. I just didn't like it as much as the others. "Black Sunday" was pretty good, but I couldn't find a link for it. I'm just glad that I found something new that I like. There are alot of iffy albums around here that are probably best left sitting on the shelf, fortunately this wasn't one of them.

Update 3:

Martin, you're a party pooper. Didn't you know that everybody who answers this question is supposed to agree with me and tell me how great I am for finding this? ;)

Update 4:

The happy face makes all the difference! :)

Doesn't sound familiar. I like that tune Lucy & Beatle Fanatic posted. The rest didn't do much for me-kind of generic and derivative, although I like that fat bass sound.

I do remember Fat Mattress http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Opo1YUvVPkQ

and Bacon Fat w/ George "Harmonica" Smith & Rod Piazza http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29XkNoYGAhg

Edit: well I did mention the bass...and that tune the others posted...and I'm adding this happy face :)

P.S. You're fabalus (yes, spelled that way intentionally)

Once again, Glen, in his strange and mystical way (much like Carnac The Magnificent) has answered a question with a riddle.

@Smiley-yeah Fat Mattress and Bacon Fat were both great (unlike this horrid noise Trixie is foisting on us :) I've known Rod from Bacon Fat for 25 plus years and knew George "Harmonica" Smith before he passed on. Here's Rod's band for the last 30 years or so, The Mighty Flyers -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7G_uPWlD40 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rl6m-uxRP4w the line up in the vid was the best incarnation of the group Rod, his wife Honey on piano, Bill Stuve on slap bass, Jimi Bott on drums and Alex Schultz on guitar.

@Smiley-All of Rod's stuff is great-Rod himself? not so much. His wife Honey is a doll though. I've probably seen the Mighty Flyers a hundred times or more. It was a weekly thing for me and a bandmate when we didn't have a gig of our own.

Yes, I own the original vinyl...haven't played it in a long time though. It's opened, but still has the shrink wrap if I recall. I bought the 'Radioactive' CD reissue a couple years ago as well.

    Not a bad band overall.

    @ Beatle -

Their first album is fairly rare, but not as uncommon as you think. There were a couple thousand (or more) pressed in the US and Canada, along with a similar run of pressings in the UK, also for RCA. You'll see them for sale on eBay and other online vinyl dealers from time to time. You can still find a nice copy for under $100. There's just waaay too much misinformation at half these blogs/sites these days. Don't believe everything you read :)

I had that 2nd album many years ago too. Never really care for it all that much. I remember trading it for some hash, Lol.

    @ Martin...Bacon Fat & Fat Mattress...both great bands!

How 'bout Fat Water? Chalk 'em up to one of the many forgettable US bands of that era, Lol...

@Martin...I've had "Grease One For Me" and "Tough Dude" on vinyl since way back...nice imported original UK vinyl on the 'Blue Horizon' label. Great sonics. Cool that you know Rod, and knew George. I have a couple of his late 60's albums on vinyl as well...very talented individual.

I also have a couple Mighty Flyers albums from the 80's on vinyl as well..private/indy labels;)

Rod's "Alphabet Blues" was pretty good too!

Hey Trixie, I remember this band from the 70's and that's a great album!

That album is very rare so take good care of it because it's probably worth some money. I think there were only 400 copies pressed.

(Edit: I just found it online selling for $80).

"Country Girl" sounds like it could have been a Cream song.

"FAT" is from my state of Massachusetts so they received some airplay on the Boston radio stations back then. There was a song from that first album titled, "Shape I'm In", that was a minor hit in this area:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wF5Z59NuPV4

That debut album was on RCA records and RCA dropped the band from their recording contract because the band was involved in a drug bust so they never released the second album they were working on for RCA. Kind of silly that a band would be dropped because of drugs, especially in those days!

They toured with The Allman Brothers Band after that first album came out but once they were dropped from RCA you didn't hear much from them except locally.

Their second and last album "Footloose" came out 6 years later on their own label "Dream Merchant" and was also an excellent album. The following tracks are from this underrated album:

"Get it While It's Hot" has a great guitar solo in the middle:

    "Dirty Money":

Thanks for awakening some great memories of this band!

BTW, "FAT" reunites for one concert every year in their hometown of Springfield Massachusetts.

I still find it amazing that there was so many bands fron the 70's that never got the airplay and recognition that they rightfully deserved.

Edit: Hi Lucy, funny how you remembered that song too!

I have been losing weight my whole life with my heaviest being 360 lbs. I lost 19 lbs in 2 weeks. And even after losing most of my weight on a basic starvation diet and knee crippling exercise I knew this was the answer. I have never been below 25% BF. I have never looked as healthy as I do. I have never had the confidence that I have now. I have never felt as good as I feel.

Sometimes in life things just passs us by, and sad to this Fat was one of those bands, I can't think of anyone who heard of them in my part of the country. But there is a band that comes close to that name that I liked called Toe Fat:

    Toe Fat - There'll Be Changes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmKHraA9y8g&feature...

    Toe Fat - A New Way http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5d8d8JTnoJI&feature...

Those songs didn't ring a bell but I remember this one, well, thanks to you I did :)

    Shape I'm In http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wF5Z59NuPV4

Yes, it's good to see you Dave :) I was starting to wonder where you'd gone.

Hi Beatle! That's what I like about this place, I probably wouldn't have remembered it if not for this question. I've already listened to it twice.

  • Great music for my ears Trixie. I like a voice like that, but sounds so much like somebody. I am not remembering who that might be. Maybe it was that guy that played in FAT.

Walk your lunch outside or to another location in the office instead of sitting and eating for your desk.
