How to show emotion through your photos?

I always saw it often to the people I critique, but I hardly show emotion in my photos..I'm guessing it's because my main focus in nature or wildlife photography, but still..

I would say that the animals in nature shots, for the most part, should be doing something. This shot of the dogs, barring the cropping issue, shows great interaction: http://www.flickr.com/photos/66188877@N03/68259964...

While this one is just cluttered, poorly focused and a bad angle: http://www.flickr.com/photos/66188877@N03/69115712...

Here is a simple image of a woodpecker: http://www.flickr.com/photos/7242193@N03/493482629...

    Compare that to yours: http://www.flickr.com/photos/66188877@N03/69116233...

You see so much more of the creatures personality in the first.

I hope that gives you a little push in the direction you are seeking!

  • Showing emotion in photographs is really a key component of a great picture. I took a look at your photo stream and you have some really nice pictures. Like you mentioned, your main focus is nature and wildlife so it will be a little more difficult to show emotion...but not impossible. Emotion can come from the scene, the warm or coolness of the image, etc.

Here are a few things I would suggest:

    1. You can change the look and feel of a photo by the way you process it. If you use Photoshop you can process an image in black and white and play with the contrast, curves, etc until that image speaks to you. Here is an example of one of my black and whites: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=32572836747...

    2. Maybe think about including a bit more of the background or scenery with your subject...sometimes this can create emotion and the feeling of a story behind the image.

    3. Consider shooting through something such as trees. This can frame your subject and create emotion.

    4. You can also process your images adding warmth or a feeling of coolness making the image feel a certain way.

    5. Use the sunlight to create a feeling or emotion. Here is an example of that: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=32646113407...

Emotion in an image is all about how the viewer feels when they look at it...your goal is to make your images more than just a stock photo of a bird or leaf. I really think that the emotion you are trying to achieve will come from processing in Photoshop.

    I hope this helped a little. :)

You're shooting animals a lot so you should look at Art Wolfe and see what he does. How do your pictures measure up? http://prints.artwolfe.com/ See the difference in the moments he captures? See the light he uses? For landscape look at Michael Kenna, http://www.michaelkenna.net/ There's a lot of feeling in his pictures.

Try to shoot like the best. You should feel something when you are taking a great shot. It's not a mechanical thing where the fstop is correct and the shutter speed is correct and I am using the rule of thirds. It's what you feel inside when you push the shutter release that matters.
