Why do people keep saying the US doesn't make anything anymore?

When in fact the US remains by FAR the largest manufacturer in the world? Why is everyone so wrong?

Well think about it, I mean every time you go to the store just look at the tags on stuff. Most consumer products are labeled "Made in China" or Taiwan, India, Italy, etc...

Most manufacturers are outsourcing all their labor to other countries that don't have minimum wage laws because it's so much cheaper. Think about it, if you were a business owner would you rather pay someone $8/hour to make the same item you can have another person make for $1/hour? The main problem is that when a government steps in and starts regulating different things like minimum wage it causes problems. Same reason that when you call tech support because your computer crashes you'll end up speaking to someone in India. It's cheaper labor, and when it comes to big business it's all about the money and how you can increase your bottom line. Also technology has played a huge impact on the job market. Back in the 40's an assembly line consisted of about 20+ people. Now they consist of robotic machines that don't get tired, don't need breaks or paychecks, and can do a job faster than a person can. I don't think people literally mean that the US doesn't make anything anymore but there's no doubt that most consumer products are made abroad.

People talk about things they don't understand or have an informed opinion about. Especially about the USA which is a social icon and is typically targeted in discussion by people that tend to neglect the faults in themselves and project those faults onto others.

IE, people self conscious about their weight will make issue of the weight of others.

This is similar to everything with people: nationality, ideology, culture, preferences, etc.

People also say US taxes are one of the highest in the world...

    It's festival of mud-slinging.

  • We import more than we export.
