what happens when a timing chain is about to go out?

have a 1998 dodge dakota and it will turn over but wont fire, was starting fine until last couple of days

    The chain stretches and jumps a link or two then timing will be off and runs very rough and backfires.

    It should rattle at idle for a few weeks, warning you that you should change soon.
