As soon as I hear an Indian accent on my phone I assume it's a scam, is this racist or just a reality?

I just had one then pretending to be from Telstra, when I caught him out he laughed & said "yes it's a scam"

I love the scammers that try to pull the "we know your PC has been compromised" stunt. When they start to ask all their annoying scary questions meant for me to hand over my details to them, I ask them this - so you do realise that my computer is a Mac.... <clunk> phone goes dead.

I usually like to string them along a bit more than that though.

Footnote: I really only wanted to post because I had to mention how screamingly funny everyones replies have been. I must remember some of those. Very creative.

It's reality, based on mathematical averages. On average, it is going to be a scam. We shouldn't be blamed for thinking this. If scams are all we've heard from the Indian accent, then we have no reason not to generalise in that way.

I think that if somebody calls you and has an Indian accent, it's probably a scam, but if you call them, like ringing for tech support, it's maybe not a scam.

I got a call earlier about 'viruses' on my computer. the guy was Indian. I just hung up. He rang back and I said I don't need help and he tried to have a go at me so I just hung up again. He didn't ring back a third time thank god! I have a Mac so its VERY hard. I'm the only one in the house who uses the internet most of the time. It was about Emails and something.

Reality. Everybody knows Indians aren't real.

    Just a reality.

I know some really nice Indian people (and some real jerks, like every race), but whenever I hear that tell-tale long-distance pause, and then someone claiming to be "Kevin from Brisbane" with a thick Indian accent, I know it's a scam.

Sometimes I just hang up. Sometimes I'll catch them out - my favourite is, "So how's the weather in Mumbai?" It makes them splutter every time. One called up in the middle of our roast lamb dinner on Australia Day. I told him in no uncertain terms to f*ck off!

Come on Reg, you're way smarter than that.

You and I both know when your phone rings and someone at the other end starts talking you are in charge. You were the one called, not the call-er. Therefore you can hang up or not. Your choice. Anyone not personally known to you means common sense prevails , keep your mouth shut, offer no confidential details--you don't walk up to a stranger in the street and give him /her your bank details do you ?? No you don't so doing it via a random call would be stupid beyond belief. As to racism , No, I don't think so. You may very well have a good lot of foreign mates but there is nothing to stop you hanging up on anyone who calls you that you don't either know personally or have any desire to talk to. But--glad you brought this up as a warning to people who still don't get that if someone rings you--you have every right to hang up. Nothing racist in that.

Do scams eventuate from foreigners? Yes they do, Aussies too.

Hello Mr. Regwah. I am calling from Nigeria regarding your recent lottery win....

Many big companies in the UK use Indian call centres, so we are used to talking to trustworthy Indians. Sad to think that most of those guys are probably university graduates.

But I am suspicious of cold calls in any accent, even the cheery Scots who ask me how I'm doing, thank me for coming to the phone etc etc.... Yeah, get to the point ... you want me to part with money I haven't got for something I don't want, and you can do it because you are God's gift to telesales and you think that half the battle is to engage me in conversation. Bad assumption...... Talk to me and you are really wasting your time.

Thank you for your time Mr. Regwah. Now, if I could just have your current account details ....

no we "outsource" to India so much nearly every banking network that has credit cards, or anything with telephone customer service is in India.

Everything that is made is made in China.

We don't do anything here in America anymore except look for work, and worry about our futures (well damn skippy hadn't realized it was all aussies in here LOL , we get that crap here in America as well)
